Ways We Serve
- Home Visit Team
Home Visit Team is the focus of our St. Vincent de Paul ministry, giving assistance to our neighbors in need. While requests can vary, it often includes rent or utilities assistance, furniture delivery, food and gas. Our visits provide the opportunity to pray with our neighbors in need and develop relationships with the poor in our community. The Home Visit Team is for adults only and interested members can explore this area of our ministry by shadowing current HVT members. - Friends of Friends in the Park
We serve Sunday lunch to the homeless and poor on the second Sunday of the month, meeting at the Ralph Wulz Tennis Center in south Riverside Park, near Central Ave. and Nims Ave., at 12:45 pm. In addition to a meal, we provide hygiene and personal care items and offer prayer and friendship to those we meet. Anywhere from 75-150 homeless and near homeless individuals and families join us for a hot meal and a few necessities each month. Individuals and families are welcome to serve and participate. Treating homelessness is costly- preventing homelessness isn't.
The current national average to support a person who is chronically homeless is over $35,000, including costs for emergency shelters, healthcare, and law enforcement. In contrast, preventing homelessness permanently through early intervention costs, on average, $2,000.
Over half a million Americans experience homelessness every year.
Cost of living increases and inflation are pushing many families over the brink. In 2023 alone, 653,000 Americans experienced homelessness. But there's good news lining these dark clouds: Communities see a major decrease in homelessness when they invest in homelessness PREVENTION programs.
How are you funded?
We are blessed to receive funding through the generosity of personal donations, from various parish organizations, an occasional grant award, and the proceeds from our annual Pitch for the Poor ten-point pitch card tournament.
